Most COTS motor controllers use simple 6-step trapezoidal commutation. Just like footsteps, these 6-steps create impact points in the rotation in the form of torque ripple and electrical harmonics in the motors. This results in reduced efficiency, and yes even sound! Our Taurus motor controllers implement Field Oriented Control (FOC) and Space Vector Pulse Width Modulation (SVPWM) resulting in much more continuous torque delivery, increases in efficiency, and reduction in unwanted heat generation and noise.
